La Vuelta a Espana 2010: Stage 14 #lavuelta #vuelta

Note to self: Asphalt? Not Lycra friendly.

Video of the crash (sorry, but Universal Sports had the “embed” disabled).

There it is, the crash that shredded then-race-leader Igor Anton (Euskaltel) like a brick of soft cheese and ended his Vuelta.

The crash happened at 75 km/h. That’s nearly 47 mph. On a freakin’ bicycle!

While I was pulling for Joaquin Rodrigues (Katusha) I hate that Anton was taken out like this. His condition was spectacular, his managing of the race was brilliant and he was all graciousness and class. He was a perfect ambassador for both the Vuelta an for cycling.

It’s taken a large part of the joy out of seeing Rodriguez dominate the stage and nearly take over the Red (leader’s) Jersey.

Nibali may be just as strong as Rodriguez, but Rodriguez seems the smarter rider.

Ezequiel Mosquera (Xacobeo-Galicia)? I don’t think he’s a serious threat for the overall, but damn if he doesn’t have some guts. I’d love to see him make the podium.
