Alberto Contador Dreams Big

Posted by bikezilla on August 4, 2010

Cyclocosm is pretty tough on Alberto Contador after Saxo Bank’s Bjarne Riis announced Alberto’s dream to win all three Grand Tours in a single season. RaceJunkie concurs with him.

I disagree.

Ok, I don’t disagree that the chances of any cyclist of the modern era ever pulling off that hat trick are infinitesimal.

I disagree that Alberto shouldn’t try it (though Alberto has issued a hasty, “Oh no, that’s not at all what I’d like to do” phony dismissal of the notion).

To begin with, how badass is it for Alberto to believe in himself enough that he thinks this is a dream he could attain? That alone makes it cooler than . . . some other thing that’s really cool, but not quite this cool.

Then, Eddy Merckx maybe is just a hair less amazing than he’s given credit for, but it was clear that he placed great respect and value on winning more than just the Tour de France and on capturing more than simply the final Yellow Jersey.

That Eddy placed such high value and importance on the lesser Tours and Jerseys elevated them across the board and it’s probably the one thing about him that I most admire him for.

It would bring, or return, a considerable amount of respect to both the Giro and the Vuelta if the reigning Boy-Godking placed them in such high esteem that he thought it a worthy goal to attempt to win all three in a single season.

This year’s Giro was fantastic, but let’s face it, it was the Tour that drew the true “A” list of riders, and no matter how good this year’s Vuelta is, it isn’t gonna see many teams sending their top riders and top support guys.

The balance is unfairly, needlessly and grossly to the side of the Tour de France and it shouldn’t be. There is too damned much Tourcentric focus right now and Alberto could help change that.

Now, if we could just get the top GC guys to take the KOM competition seriously.

While we’re at it, might we manage to get rid of that Godawful ugly Polkadot Jersey? How can we expect anyone important to want to wear it if they have to walk around looking like the dog (or whatever the Hell it’s supposed to be) from “Put Me In The Zoo”?
